Music in the Classroom and a Giveaway!

How many of us are teachers who use music in the classroom? Maybe a mom who uses music at home with your own children? I can raise a hand on both of those. Music is a tool that can be used for any subject or any grade level. Yes, even the big ones can learn through music! For English Language Learners in our classrooms or for anyone who is learning a second language, music is a tool that can be used in order to make learning a second language easier. Click to read more about an artist who uses music to do just that and enter a giveaway to win her new album!
Music has always been a huge part of my life. I was in choir all of middle school, high school, and two years of college. I enjoyed performing because it was a way to cope with my feelings no matter what they were. Plus it was fun because my BFFs were in choir with me. We still bust out some of the old choir tunes when we get together! When I hear a certain song it can invoke certain feelings or a memory. A happy song can make you feel better when you're sad or a sad song can make you feel like there's someone to relate to.

As educators, we know that music can be a very powerful tool to get our students to learn. I've attended workshops about using music in the classroom. You want children to be calm while working? Throw on some classical music. I love using modern music turned into lullabies! Twinkle, Twinkle Little Rock Star is a band who makes songs like Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, even Rock music like Papa Roach into lullabies! Check out their youtube here. My personal favorite? The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack! My campus uses lullabies like these in our cafeteria during lunch time. I also love throwing some GoNoodle on my project as a reward so kids can dance or during math time for numbers just to name a few suggestions. You can find a song about just about anything you want the kids to learn about and they will be humming and singing that song in no time. They'll be learning without even realizing it!

As a bilingual teacher, you may have run across the issue of not finding as much or the kind of music you want. Cute songs are fine, but sometimes you want to find content you're teaching about in the music you use in the classroom. Or maybe you want a song that's in both English and Spanish so that your bilingual students can learn about it in both languages? I recently found an artist who does just that. Nathalia was a music educator and also a mom who want to make sure that her children would speak both English and Spanish. Since she is herself bilingual and has a music background, she started writing her own bilingual songs. Her third album 'Cuando era pequena: When I Was Your Age' is being released today. I got to listen to her album before it's release and let me tell you, I LOVED IT! It's exactly something I could use in my classroom. My own daughter who will be in second grade loved it as well. She was dancing around the house while listening to it with me. Nathalia was gracious enough to do a giveaway of her new album with me. The giveway will begin today Monday, June 20th and will close on Wednesday, June 22. I will post the winner of the album on my blog and on instagram on Thursday, June 23. In the meantime, please check out Nathalia on all her social media platforms. I personally loved her "Planetas" music video since I'm a science nerd! I hope you are able to use Nathalia's music or any music to get your students movin' and learnin'!

First way to enter is by posting a comment below to the question do you use music in your classroom or at home with your own children? Tell me all about it.
